Generate 50% of Gujarat's electricity from renewable sources
Bharatiya Janata Party · Gujarat Legislative Assembly Election 2022
Last updated 15 Oct 2026
What does this status mean?
Meaningful delivery has occurred, but the stated commitment is incomplete.
Status describes delivery. Confidence describes how strong the available evidence is.
Original manifesto wording
“We will be the first large state to achieve the feat of having 50% of the total energy production from renewable sources and thus safeguarding the energy interests of the state.”
Our Assessment
On MNRE's utility-electricity measure, renewables supplied 46.31% of Gujarat's electricity generation in FY2025–26, below the promised 50%. Electricity generation is the relevant available indicator; it does not measure all primary energy, such as transport fuels. Karnataka recorded a renewable electricity share above half in the same dataset, so Gujarat's first-large-state condition is also not established. Delivery has advanced substantially, but the complete commitment remains unmet.
The reasoning behind the verdict
Why this assessment?
Reviewed
01 · Delivery status
Why partially done?
Actual output remains below the numerical threshold, and the leadership condition has not been demonstrated.
FY2025–26. Measures electricity generation, including renewable hydro; does not measure installed MW or all primary-energy use. The bar covers the 50% component only.
02 · Strength of evidence
Why high confidence?
MNRE's annual electricity statistics provide comparable state-level generation figures.
What would help us reassess?
The documents that could clarify delivery of this commitment.
- A later full-year Gujarat generation mix showing at least 50% from renewables
- A consistent definition of 'large state' and evidence supporting the first-state condition
- Clarification if 'total energy' includes fuels outside electricity, for which this dataset is only a proxy
Status describes delivery. Confidence describes the evidence.
