Our Assessment

high

India has continued to climb the global rankings. The government year-end economic review (December 2025) and NITI Aayog confirmed that India, with a nominal GDP of about USD 4.18 trillion, has surpassed Japan to become the world fourth-largest economy, trailing only the United States, China and Germany, with official confirmation expected once final FY data is released in 2026. The government and the IMF project India overtaking Germany to reach third place within roughly 2.5 to 3 years (by about 2028, projected GDP near USD 7.3 trillion by 2030). The guaranteed third-largest position is therefore on a clear trajectory but not yet achieved. Partial.
