Our Assessment

high

Launched on 25 December 2025 (Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s 101st birth anniversary) with 45 canteens; 71 were operational by 19 February 2026 against a target of 100. Each serves a ₹5 thali twice daily (the government bears roughly ₹25/plate) to JJ-cluster residents, daily-wage workers and the urban poor, replacing the earlier Jan Aahar scheme; ₹104.24 crore allocated. Over 33,000 meals were served in the first two days. The promise — establishing ₹5 canteens in JJ clusters — is delivered and still scaling; long-term subsidy sustainability is the open question.
