Our Assessment

low

India supports the study of Indian languages abroad through ICCR academic chairs in Indian studies (including Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil and other languages) at foreign universities and through cultural-centre language courses, reinforced by the conferral of classical-language status on several Indian languages (including the 2024 additions of Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali). However, a dedicated, measurable push to expand the study of classical Indian languages in major global institutions, as specifically pledged, is only thinly evidenced. Partial, low confidence.
