Last updated 5 Jun 2026

We have initiated the National Clean Air Program framework, aimed at reducing air pollution across 131 cities. We will ensure the NCAP effectively achieves designated annual average ambient air quality standards, especially achieving National Air Quality Standards in 60 Cities by 2029.

Our Assessment

medium

Under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP, covering 131 cities), the government reports that 103 cities recorded reduced PM10 levels in 2024-25 versus the 2017-18 baseline and 22 cities met the National Ambient Air Quality Standards. However, a large majority of monitored cities still exceed the standards, and independent assessments note shortcomings in emission-source control. The pledge’s specific target - meeting standards in 60 cities by 2029 - is being progressed but is far from achieved. Partial.
