Our Assessment

high

Ethanol blending in petrol has risen dramatically, from about 1.5 per cent in 2014 to around 20 per cent (E20), with India achieving the 20 per cent average blending milestone in 2025 - well ahead of the original 2030 timeline - under the Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme. This has reduced crude-oil imports and forex outgo, cut emissions and provided additional income to farmers and sugar mills. The pledge to further increase blending has been substantially delivered, with attention now shifting to sustaining E20 and exploring higher blends. Fulfilled (target achieved; sustained rollout continues).

Promise Timeline

1 Aug 2025

India achieves ~20% average ethanol blending (E20) ahead of the 2030 target, cutting oil imports and boosting farmer/sugar-sector income.
