Last updated 4 Jun 2026

7 IITs, 16 IIITs, 7 IIMs, 15 AIIMS, 315 Medical Colleges and 390 universities have been set-up in the past decade. We are committed to strengthening these institutes and further increasing the number of institutions of higher learning. We will continue to upgrade the existing institutions through focused funding, capacity building, infrastructure upgradation and dedicated research grants.

Our Assessment

medium

The network of higher-education institutions has expanded substantially over the past decade (additional IITs, IIITs, IIMs, AIIMS, medical colleges and universities), and strengthening continues through schemes such as PM-USHA (for state universities/colleges), the Institutions of Eminence framework, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) for research funding, and infrastructure upgrades. As an open-ended commitment to further increase and upgrade institutions, it is in ongoing delivery. Partial.
