Our Assessment

high

Inland water transport (IWT) cargo has grown sharply, from about 18 million tonnes in 2014 to around 146 million tonnes in 2025, driven by the Jal Marg Vikas Project, expansion of national waterways, the Arth Ganga model and convergence with Namami Gange. This represents a large increase in IWT activity, though the pledge’s specific aim of doubling IWT’s share of overall transportation is an ongoing target. Partial (strong action).

Promise Timeline

30 Jan 2026

Economic Survey reports inland water transport cargo rising from 18 MMT (2014) to ~146 MMT (2025).
