Original manifesto wording
“We will modernise traditional crafts by facilitating design interventions by collaborating with design skill institutes and setting up a Handicraft Design Bank to upskill traditional artisans, opening doors to global market opportunities and transforming their craft into sustainable livelihood.”
Our Assessment
Design-led modernisation of crafts is being pursued through the Comprehensive Handicrafts Cluster Development Scheme and the Designer Empanelment programme under the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), which engage designers (with NID/NIFT graduates preferred) on outcome-linked terms to introduce new designs and improve sales, alongside marketing and export support. However, a dedicated "Handicraft Design Bank" by that name, as specifically pledged, is not clearly established. Partial: design-intervention machinery exists; the named Design Bank is not yet evidenced.
