Original manifesto wording
“We will further simplify the GST portal to increase accessibility to users, especially MSMEs and small traders.”
Our Assessment
he government has implemented material GST-portal simplification after the 2024 election, particularly for small and lower-risk businesses. Following the 56th GST Council meeting in September 2025, an optional simplified registration scheme was operationalised from 1 November 2025. Under this system, eligible applicants can receive GST registration automatically within three working days with reduced officer intervention. Government records in February 2026 confirmed that the scheme had been introduced and had reduced registration time. Further reforms continued in October 2026. At its 57th meeting on 8 October, the GST Council confirmed that automatic registrations were already being granted through the portal under Rule 14A. It also recommended additional portal improvements including clearer registration requirements, drop-down document selection, navigational guidance, tool-tips and contextual assistance, automatic processing of most registration amendments, system-based cancellation and revocation, and a simplified registration mechanism for small sellers using e-commerce platforms. The 57th Council measures should be distinguished between features already operating and recommendations awaiting legal or portal implementation. Automatic Rule 14A registration is operational; several October 2026 changes require amendments or further implementation. The evidence therefore shows substantial and continuing simplification of GST registration and portal interaction, while further portal reforms remain underway.

01 · Delivery status
Why on track?
The commitment is specifically to make the GST portal easier to use, particularly for MSMEs and small traders. The strongest completed reform is the simplified registration route introduced from 1 November 2025. Eligible lower-risk applicants can obtain registration automatically within three working days, reducing manual officer interaction. The government subsequently confirmed that this mechanism had reduced registration time. Press Information Bureau The 57th GST Council on 8 October 2026 confirmed that automatic registrations under Rule 14A are being granted through the portal and proposed a further round of simplification: clearer document requirements, improved navigation, drop-down selections, tool-tips/contextual guidance, automatic amendments and cancellation processes, and simplified registration for small e-commerce sellers. Press Information Bureau However, several of those October measures are Council recommendations requiring rule, form or portal changes. They should not yet be described as fully implemented.
